The term "420" originated in the early 1970s with a group of high school students in San Rafael, California, who called themselves "the Waldos." They would meet at 4:20 PM after school to search for an abandoned cannabis crop they had heard about.
Though they never found the crop, the term "420" became their code word for cannabis consumption. The term spread when one of the Waldos became connected with the Grateful Dead band, and the rest is history.
Today, April 20th (4/20) has evolved into an international counterculture holiday where people celebrate cannabis culture through festivals, events, and gatherings.
