The Terpene Boiling Point Chart Everyone Copies Is Wrong. Here’s the Real One.

Quick Answer

The chart most sites copy says β-caryophyllene boils at 130°C (266°F) and humulene somewhere around 106–123°C. Those are vacuum-distillation numbers. At normal pressure caryophyllene boils at about 263°C (505°F), humulene about 276°C (529°F), and THC above 400°C — hotter than any vaporizer runs. Your vape works anyway because compounds evaporate well below their boiling points. What the real numbers tell you is the order: pinene and myrcene come off first, then limonene and terpinolene, then linalool, with the peppery sesquiterpenes last. Start at 340°F and step up 10°F at a time.

I’ve had a terpene boiling-point chart taped inside the cabinet where I keep the vaporizers for two years. It came from a vape retailer’s blog, which got it from a testing lab’s blog, which got it from who knows where. It lists caryophyllene — the peppery terpene in GG#4, the one that acts on CB2 receptors — at 130°C. That’s 266°F, lower than limonene, lower than myrcene. It implies the heaviest molecule on the list is the most fragile.

That’s backwards, and it took a 2023 paper in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research to spell out why. Here is the corrected chart, where the wrong numbers came from, why your vaporizer works regardless, and what the whole thing means for your temperature dial. Then, because this site sits on a live feed of Ohio dispensary lab data, what’s actually dominant on the shelves.

The terpene boiling point chart, corrected

Boiling points at normal atmospheric pressure (1 atm / 760 mmHg). The “what most charts print” column is the vacuum-distillation figure that gets copied around without its pressure attached. Effects are the folk and preliminary associations — the same ones the Strain Finder uses — not medical claims.

Where the wrong numbers came from

A boiling point is the temperature where a liquid’s vapor pressure equals the pressure pushing down on it. Lower the pressure and the boiling point drops — that’s why water boils at about 94°C in Denver. Chemists routinely measure heavy, fragile molecules like sesquiterpenes under vacuum precisely so they can boil them without cooking them. Those measurements are correct. They just come with a pressure attached.

PubChem’s entry for β-caryophyllene shows both figures side by side: roughly 256–259°C at 760 mmHg, and 129–130°C at 14 mmHg. Somewhere along the chain of blogs copying blogs, the pressure fell off and the 130 survived. Terpenes & Testing, the trade magazine that first called this out in 2023 and re-checked its numbers in August 2026, puts the tell plainly: the chart shows the heavier compounds with lower numbers than the lighter ones, which reads as though the heavy ones are the most volatile. The truth is the reverse.

The same thing happened to THC. The 155–157°C figure that shows up everywhere traces back to a measurement under hard vacuum — at 0.05 torr, THC boils at about 155°C. Eyal and colleagues, writing in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research in 2023, note that cannabinoids can’t even be measured at atmospheric pressure because they decompose first; extrapolating the vacuum data with the Clausius–Clapeyron relation puts THC’s normal boiling point above 400°C and CBD’s above 463°C. Their one-line verdict on caryophyllene: shown in many publications as 119°C or 130°C, while the actual boiling point is about 263°C.

The quick sanity check: monoterpenes (pinene, myrcene, limonene, linalool) are C10 molecules. Sesquiterpenes (caryophyllene, humulene, nerolidol) are C15 — half again as heavy. If a chart shows a C15 boiling below a C10, it’s mixing vacuum and atmospheric numbers.

If nothing boils in there, why does your vaporizer work?

Because boiling isn’t the mechanism. Vaporization is any conversion of liquid to gas, and it happens at every temperature above absolute zero — it just happens faster as vapor pressure rises. A puddle evaporates at 20°C without boiling. Your flower does the same thing at 180°C, only much faster.

Eyal’s group put numbers on it. At 180°C (356°F), a typical vaping temperature, the monoterpenes evaporate more than 3,500 times faster than THC, because their vapor pressure at that temperature is enormously higher. So the terpenes leave the flower first and you inhale them before meaningful cannabinoid delivery begins. THC follows by evaporation, steadily, for the rest of the session — without ever reaching its boiling point.

That single fact explains most of what you already know from experience. The first draw of a fresh bowl is the most flavorful because the light terpenes are leaving fastest. The last draws taste like nothing and hit the hardest because the terpenes are spent and the THC is still coming. And a bowl you left in a warm vaporizer overnight tastes flat the next day for the same reason a jar left open does — the volatile fraction evaporated at room temperature, no heat required. What this means for your temperature dial

The boiling-point order is real and useful: it’s the order of volatility, so it predicts which terpenes come off fastest at any given temperature. What it doesn’t do is act as an on/off switch. You get some of everything at every temperature; the ratio shifts as you climb. Read the table below as “what’s leading,” not “what’s released.”

The step-up method still works — it just works for a different reason than the old chart said. Start at 340°F. Take three or four draws. Raise the temperature 10°F. Repeat. You’re walking the strain’s profile from most volatile to least, and you’ll taste the turn from citrus-and-pine to pepper somewhere around 380°F on a caryophyllene-heavy strain. What’s actually dominant on Ohio shelves

This site runs a feed of lab-tested terpene panels from Northeast Ohio dispensary menus — the same data behind the Strain Finder. On September 1, 2026 it covered 1,021 unique strains across 10 dispensaries (Amplify, AYR Woodmere, The Botanist Solon, The Forest Lakewood, Klutch, The Landing, RISE Cleveland, Roam, Story and Terrasana). Three things stand out.

Limonene runs the menu. It was the single largest terpene in 43% of strains. Myrcene led 26%, caryophyllene 25%. Linalool led just 3%, pinene 2%, and humulene almost never leads — it rides along with caryophyllene. If you shop by the indica/sativa label expecting myrcene-heavy “indicas” to be the norm, the shelf disagrees with you: the modern dessert-strain lineage is citrus first.

Total terpenes are lower than the marketing suggests. The median strain tested at 1.92% total terpenes. Only one in ten cleared 2.65%. The highest on any menu was 4.91%. Anything above about 2.5% is genuinely loud by Ohio standards; a jar that smells like nothing usually tests under 1.5%.

Notice that the caryophyllene leader, GG#4, is a strain most people would call a heavy indica — and its defining terpene, together with its running mate humulene (which GG#4 also leads), sits at the top of the chart, well above every monoterpene. That’s why GG#4 keeps tasting like pepper right to the end of a bowl while a limonene strain goes flat by the fourth draw. The chart predicts it. The old chart predicted the opposite.

Questions people actually ask

What temperature does beta-caryophyllene boil at?

About 263°C (505°F) at normal atmospheric pressure. The 116–130°C figure printed on most terpene charts is a vacuum-distillation measurement taken at roughly 10–14 mmHg, not at the pressure your vaporizer operates at. Humulene is similar: about 276°C (529°F) at atmospheric pressure, versus the ~106–123°C vacuum value that gets copied around.

If terpenes and THC boil above vaporizer temperatures, how does a dry herb vaporizer work?

Compounds evaporate well below their boiling points — that’s vapor pressure. A boiling point is just the temperature where vapor pressure equals atmospheric pressure. At a typical vaping temperature of 180°C (356°F), the light monoterpenes evaporate thousands of times faster than THC, so you taste terpenes first, and THC is delivered by evaporation throughout the session without ever boiling. THC’s normal boiling point is above 400°C; nothing in a vaporizer reaches it.

What temperature should I vape for the most terpene flavor?

Start at 340°F (171°C), take three or four draws, then raise the temperature 10°F and repeat. Between 315 and 340°F the pine and musk of pinene and myrcene lead; 340–365°F brings in limonene and terpinolene; 365–390°F brings linalool; above 390°F the peppery sesquiterpenes make up a bigger share and THC delivery peaks. Every compound is present at every temperature — the proportions shift, which is why the first draw tastes best and the last ones hit hardest.
